The overall design of this piece was inspired by a luxurious gown traditionally worn over a kimono during the Edo period. Kurenai-Kai reimagined it specifically for use as an obi (sash) for a kimono. Within the leaves, I intricately embroidered non-periodic geometric patterns, such as amber. The inspiration for incorporating amber into the design stems from its quasi-crystal structure. I had wanted to intricately embroider such patterns since 2011, when Dr. Shechtman discovered quasi-crystals.
